Overview #
Long forms can feel overwhelming, especially when visitors see fields that do not apply to them. Conditional logic and multi-step layouts can help organize questions and create a more relevant form experience.
Availability depends on your installed Lumo Forms version and the features enabled for your site.
What Is Conditional Logic? #
Conditional logic displays or applies behavior to fields according to a visitor’s answers or other supported conditions.
For example, a business inquiry form might ask whether the visitor is interested in a product or a service. Depending on the answer, the form could show relevant follow-up questions.
How to Plan Conditional Fields #
Before configuring a conditional form:
- Decide which information you need.
- Identify the answers that should trigger additional fields.
- Keep each condition simple and understandable.
- Determine what should happen when the visitor changes an earlier answer.
- Test every possible path through the form.
If the installed version provides conditional rules, configure them using its available condition builder. Do not assume that a particular operator or action exists unless it is shown in your version.
What Is a Multi-Step Form? #
A multi-step form divides a longer form into smaller sections. This can help visitors focus on one group of questions at a time.
For example, a lead qualification form might contain:
- Step 1: Contact information
- Step 2: Project requirements
- Step 3: Review and submit
Use meaningful step titles and make progress clear where the feature supports it.
Design Tips #
Keep each step focused. Group related fields together.
Avoid unnecessary questions. A multi-step form should organize useful information, not make an unnecessarily long form look shorter.
Provide clear navigation. Visitors should understand how to continue and return to earlier steps where supported.
Test validation. Check that required fields are validated appropriately and that visitors do not lose their answers unexpectedly.
Testing Checklist #
Before publishing, test every conditional branch, each step transition, required-field behavior, mobile layouts, and successful submission.
If a field does not appear as expected, review the conditions and verify that the selected field values match the rules.
Next Steps #
Use conditional logic and multi-step layouts only when they improve the form’s purpose and usability. For simple contact forms, a single short page is often sufficient.
